WHY STUDY AT THE FACULTY OF ECONOMICS, UNIVERSITY OF SPLIT?

Economy is all around us. Even when we are not aware, economic thinking leads us in almost every decision we make in our lives.

WHAT EXACTLY IS ECONOMICS?

Economics is the analysis, synthesis, reflection, differentiation, decision-making, and finally evaluation of resources at our disposal, intellectual or material, or, according to Nobel laureate Samuelson: “Economics is the science that studies the way societies use scarce resources to produce goods and services, to better meet their needs."

FACULTY OF ECONOMICS IN SPLIT AND STUDY PROGRAMS IT RUNS

The Faculty of Economics is one of University of Split’s oldest faculties and has been a place of scientific excellence, innovation, creativity, international collaboration, socially responsible activities and high business and interpersonal ethics since 1974.

The Faculty of Economics in Split meets the criteria for vertical articulation, on two levels: for university or professional (vocational) studies.

The difference between university and professional study

University study prepares students for jobs in science and higher education, in the business world, the public sector and society in general. Professional study provides the level of knowledge and skills needed to perform certain occupations, ensures immediate inclusion in the labor market and prepares students for challenges of entrepreneurship. The levels can be exchanged during study.

STUDY PROGRAMS

UNIVERSITY STUDY

Undergraduate university study lasts for 3 years. Completing the undergraduate university study, the student is issued a certificate confirming the completion of studies and the acquisition of the academic title: Bachelor (baccalaureus) of Economics.

The Faculty of Economics, University of Split, organizes and runs three undergraduate university studies: Economics, Business Economics and Tourism, with accompanying specializations.

For each completed year, the student acquires 60 ECTS credits. After completing the undergraduate university study and acquiring 180 ECTS credits, the student can enroll the adequate graduate study.

Graduate university study lasts for 2 years. Completing it, the student is issued a diploma confirming as much and acquires the academic title Master of Economics.

The Faculty of Economics organizes and runs three graduate university studies: Economics, Business Economics with corresponding specializations, together with Tourism and Hospitality.

For each completed year, the student acquires 60 ECTS credits. After completing graduate university study and acquiring 120 ECTS credits (a total of 300 ECTS), the student can enroll the corresponding postgraduate university or specialist study.

PROFESSIONAL STUDY

Professional (or vocational) study lasts for three years. Completing it, the student is issued a certificate confirming as much and acquires the title: Bachelor of Economics.

The Faculty of Economics, University of Split, organizes and runs two professional studies: Small Enterprise Management with corresponding specializations and Tourism Operations.

For each completed year, the student acquires 60 ECTS credits. Completing this professional study and acquiring 180 ECTS credits, the student can enroll university graduate study (having mastered the Program for satisfying conditions for enrollment) or specialist graduate study.

Professional specialist graduate study "Management" with corresponding specializations lasts for two years. Completion the study, the student acquires 120 ECTS and is issued a diploma confirming as much, as well as the acquisition of academic title: Bachelor of Economics.

POSTGRADUATE SPECIALIST STUDY PROGRAMS

The programs combine advanced knowledge of economics and its individual areas, economic sectors and groups, as well as advanced quantitative-statistical methods.

Programs: Specialist Postgraduate Study in Economics and Specialist Postgraduate Study in Business Economics

Duration: 3 semesters, leading to 90 ECTS credits and the academic degree: University Specialist in Economics (univ. spec. oec.).

DOCTORAL STUDY PROGRAM

The Faculty of Economics in Split has to offer Postgraduate university (doctoral) study of Economics and Business Economics, which last 3 years (6 semesters).

Completing the study, the student gets 180 ECTS credits, as well as acquiring the academic degree Doctor of Science (Ph.D.) in the field of economics.

SOME MORE ON WHY (STUDY AT) THE FACULTY OF ECONOMICS, UNIVERSITY OF SPLIT?

• The Faculty of Economics is part of the University of Split’s family and, according to Times Higher Education 2021, it has occupied a place between 801-1000 on the world universities ranking list. For the first time, it has been the only Croatian university to be ranked in 10 of the 17 sustainable development goals, which ranks it among the 4% best in the world.

• University of Split’s study of Business Economics holds the prestigious international EPAS accreditation, which places the Faculty of Economics in Split among best Business Economics study programs in the world.

• There are over 100 agreements with companies and associations from various fields of activity in which students can realize practical work (traineeships) during their studies, both undergraduate and graduate. Many students find first jobs during their studies.

• Faculty of Economics’ Office for International Cooperation currently has more than 60 agreements with institutions from more than 20 countries and has so far helped realize more than 1,500 exchanges. Taking classes or traineeships abroad, traveling, meeting new people and cultures are all advantages of studying at the Faculty of Economics in Split.

• Socially responsible business has been Faculty of Economics’ mission from the very beginning and has permeated every segment of its work, particularly in the Center for Socially Useful Learning.

• Faculty of Economics in Split is an “advanced member” of the UN’s Global compact initiative, called Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME), which recognizes the need to strengthen cooperation with civil society organizations (CSOs) in order to solve social problems in the community, which is learnt in classes taken and the experiences gained at the Faculty.

• Faculty of Economics in Split is the only one in Croatia that cooperates with UNESCO on a prestigious international project (EUROPEAN UNION'S HORIZON 2020 RESEARCH AND INNOVATION PROGRAMME) that explores the impact of cultural tourism on the sustainability of tourist destinations.

• The Faculty of Economics (EFST) also hosts the Student Entrepreneurship Incubator that is intended to all proactive and enterprising University of Split students, which aims to promote youth entrepreneurship and ad to success of their entrepreneurial endeavors. We are proud that, so far, over 20 business entities emerged from the Student Entrepreneurship Incubator.

• EFST also has the International Strategic and Economic Councils consisting of the Faculty advisory bodies’ members, members of the academic community and economy who have achieved internationally recognizable results. Their role is to use their experience and ideas to help the long-term development of the Faculty’s main activities: teaching, scientific research and lifelong learning, that is adjust the Faculty’s study programs to needs of the labor market.

The Faculty of Economics library, with over 30,000 publications and digital sources, ranks second in the Republic of Croatia, first in Dalmatia, in terms of the economic profession’s fund of books, and is one of the most modern libraries in Croatia.

The European Documentation Center (EDC) also operates within the library and acts as a reference point for informing citizens about the European Union, disseminating its official publications and documents, as well as promoting the values ​​on which the European Union is based.

• The Faculty of Economics’ modern and architecturally impressive building, located in one of the most modern and functional campuses in this part of Europe, represents a complete system of spatial and technological model in accordance with the needs of teaching and other activities. In addition, it satisfies all conditions to realize a wide variety of activities the Faculty is developing today.

• The Faculty building covers 11,000 m2 with 2,155 seats distributed in 18 state-of-the-art halls, 4 conference rooms, 4 IT laboratories that serve for teaching and one for students.

COMPETITIVENESS IN THE LABOR MARKET

The Faculty of Economics in Split has a HIGH EMPLOYMENT RATE.

Over 80% of EFST students are employed within 6 months from graduation (official data from the Croatian Employment Service).

POSSIBILITY OF ATTENDING CLASSES IN ENGLISH

For years, EFST has been organizing modular classes in English, both for incoming students (guests) and for home students. During each semester, both undergraduate and graduate students can select one or more courses they will take in English.
