Sociology

Undergraduate and graduate studies of sociology in Split were conceived as the first research study of sociology with workshop-type-teaching and an emphasis on particular sociologies. That makes their programs differ from existing studies of sociology in Croatia, enabling a significant contribution in understanding and interpreting of the modern society’s tendencies and challenges.

In recent decades, we have witnessed the intense affirmation of sociology as a science studying society, interpreting its processes and the accelerating changes that are taking place. In other words, Croatian society is going through an intensive process of radical social change with many accompanying phenomena that require professional and scientific processing done by experts with precisely those profiles, trained in the study of sociology.

Given the needs of the labor market, there is a demand for sociologists who, given how broad their education is, find jobs in a wide range of public and private organizations and institutions, pointing to how adaptable the profession is to diverse professional conditions and requirements. Sociologists are employed as experts in state institutions and services, research centers, the private sector, the media, and increasingly in non-governmental organizations that cover data collection, research and analytical work, data entry, processing and archiving. That means that after completing their studies, students will be able to apply the acquired knowledge in preparing for all phases of practical work, research, studies, projects and the like.

Also, the Department of Sociology fosters cooperation with the City of Split and the Split-Dalmatia County’s local community, and is cooperating with a number of associations, where sociology students act as volunteers and complete their traineeships. Thanks to such engagement, some of our student - volunteers, found employment in those same associations.

An integral part of the study program is the wide range of elective courses, traineeships, professional practice in kindergartens and fieldwork. An important part of competencies gained in this study is inclusive education and training students to build partnerships in kindergartens, families and the local community. Recently, the need for a larger number of employees in this sector of education has been growing, so this study enables high employability in the labor market.

Teacher education

Integrated undergraduate and graduate university study of Teacher education educates future Masters of primary education (mag. Prim. Educ.) who acquire education with modern forms of teaching and an interdisciplinary approach by studying social sciences, humanities and natural sciences.

The primary school teacher is the base of educating educators, which carries enormous responsibility of all professors of Teacher Education. The goal is to train students to act in real life situations, observe and understand natural and social processes and phenomena, design activities, interactive workshops and various projects, in which one thinks critically and concludes logically with the aim of finding solutions and acting with a purpose. In addition to the methodological and pedagogical-psychological group of subjects-courses creating-forming the basis of an educational worker, students can opt for one of three offered modules in the second year of study and thus focus on early foreign language learning (English), information and communication technologies or education for sustainable development.

Throughout their studies, students get acquainted with principles of living in harmony with nature, using renewable resources to reduce climate change and preserve the planet for future generations. In the modern world of informatization and digitalization, our students are at a high level of information literacy. During their studies, students cooperate with government, voluntary and volunteer organizations where they improve on acquired skills and competencies as well as help children and adults. Graduates are versatile interdisciplinary experts who can not only work in primary school and teach certain subjects (such as foreign language and computer science, and if necessary other subjects), but are also employed in various educational and cultural institutions and associations that help children in development, with disabilities, gifted children and those who promote sustainable life.
