For three days, from March 19 to 21, 2025, Split was the centre of world’s earthquake engineering scene at the 3rd Croatian Conference on Earthquake Engineering (3CroCEE).
This scientific meeting was jointly organized by University of Split Faculty of Civil Engineering, Architecture and Geodesy and University of Zagreb’s Faculty of Civil Engineering, on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of earthquakes in Zagreb and Petrinja 2020.
The opening ceremony took place in the presence of Croatian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Physical Planning, Construction and State Property, Branko Bačić, Minister of Culture, Nina Obuljen Koržinek Ph.D., Mayor of Split, Prof. Ivica Puljak Ph.D., University of Split’s Rector, Prof. Dragan Ljutić Ph.D., and Vice-Rector for Infrastructure, Prof. Nikša Jajac Ph.D., including numerous other distinguished guests.
The conference’s aim, as pointed out by FGAG’s Dean, Prof. Neno Torić Ph.D., was to once again draw attention to one of the greatest natural risks to which Croatia is exposed and raise awareness of seismic risk, with a special emphasis on cities in Dalmatia, known for their cultural heritage and beauty, but at the same time represent a significant seismic threat, due to large presence of traditional buildings, whose seismic characteristics are not always adequate in relation to modern safety standards.
At the conference, scientists from all over the world presented results of their research in 153 presentations.
A novelty of this year's conference was a competition of civil engineering students from Universities of Osijek, Rijeka, Zagreb, Split and Mostar, who showed models of buildings they had been working on for the past two months at University of Split’s Faculty of Civil Engineering, Architecture and Geodesy and tested their resistance to earthquakes, with a simulated mini platform.
