Celebration of the 15th anniversary of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Split celebrated the 15th anniversary at a ceremony held on Wednesday, 23 September.

Today our Faculty celebrates its 15th anniversary. We are founded by the Decision of the Senate of the University of Split issued on 20 June 2005. Since 6 October 2005 the Faculty of Primary Education has joined the Department of Humanities to constitute this new institution. However, our history dates way back into the history rich in culture and humanistic tradition endowed from Split and Dalmatia that was continuously and vigorously being built by a number of Croatian intellectuals such as Thomas the Archdeacon, Marko Marulić, Gajo Bulat, don Frane Bulić, Ante Trumbić and many more. The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, as a true successor of the College of Pedagogy, founded exactly 75 years ago, has continued to enrich the legacy of their efforts in scientific-research work, as well as in education and teaching staff training, through intellectual and cultural activities of professors and students from humanistic, social and interdisciplinary fields, including artistic fields – sad the dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social, professor Gloria Vickov, Ph.D., who also added that despite of serious challenges related to staff issues and inadequate premises that marked the first decade of the Faculty, its employers and students through hard work, wise and visionary leadership, have managed to ensure one of the leading positions among the University constituents which is, in addition, one of the best ranked constituents.

The anniversary was also attended by the Rector of the University of Split, professor Dragan Ljutić, Ph.D., who congratulated all employees and students and held an opening speech where he stressed the importance of humanistic and social sciences.

When we talk about STEM areas, we know how important it is to encourage their development as a pledge for progress, however, the society cannot survive or grow without the humanistic and social component, and we have great local minds precisely from humanistic and social sciences to support it – sad the rector emphasizing that the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences will always have the support from the University Management Office when it comes to future growth and development.

The prefect of the Split-Dalmatia County, Blaženko Boban, has also congratulated the Faculty and promised the continuance of the successful cooperation between the County and the Faculty on all joint projects.
