Oxford’s Year at St. Duje Regatta – they also celebrated in the Legends’ Race on the Riva Waterfront

Split's Riva once again hosted the rowing Legends from Oxford, Cambridge and Split, and our Oxford guests emerged victorious from the tense finals, just as their students did, both male and female, the day before in students’ race of eights.

As an introduction, was by students from University of Aachen, University of Zagreb and University of Split, rowed in the show race and hosts celebrated winning two races. St. Duje regatta was closed by a duel between Split’s legends against those from Oxford and Cambridge, won by Oxford rowers that include Tokyo Olympians. Cambridge had one win, so they got silver, while the team from Split finished with bronze. Rowers then walked to the Peristyle, where the award ceremony took place in beautiful surroundings of Split’s historic part. University of Split Rector, prof. Dragan Ljutić Ph.D., St. Duje Regatta’s President of the Organizing Committee, Juraj Gamulin, Head of Split’s Department of Sports, Igor Maretić, Croatian Olympic Committee Representative, Mia Baćić, State Secretary at Ministry of Tourism and Sports, Tonči Glavina, awarded the medals.

Oxford’s spokesman and a former Tokyo Olympian, Liam Corrigan, shared his impressions: “It is fantastic to row near Riva. We had three great races against Split and Cambridge. We thank the organizers for this great event, it was fun to meet local people, guests from Germany and all over Europe and spend time in Split.”

Nikša Skelin, bronze medallist from Olympic Games and president of the Dalmatia’s Rowing Federation, spoke on behalf of Split’s hosts.

“Our feeling in the boat was great, but Oxford and Cambridge’s strength and youth ruled on the winner. Do not forget that their team includes gold medallists from the Tokyo Olympics. "

20th edition of the International St. Duje Rowing Regatta concluded and we are looking forward to the following one next year.
