Heritage that sparks debates: CIRCE Project connects researchers in Split

Goals

  • Cilj 16
  • Cilj 17
In February, University of Split’s Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences hosted international researchers from Italy and Spain, as part of the European project CIRCE - Controversial Cultural Heritage in Europe. This incoming mobility was part of research activities of one of the project’s work packages, led by assoc. prof. Ivana Čapeta Rakić Ph.D. from Faculty of Humanities. The program included intense fieldwork, expert meetings, participatory workshops, and a series of activities aimed at recognizing and mapping potentially controversial cultural heritage in Croatia. During the mobility, research team visited numerous sites in Istria, including Lovran, Oprtalj, Vižinada, Pula, Beram, Lindar, Pazin, Rovinj, Svetvinčenat, and Hum, as well as areas around Split, with visits to Klis Fortress, Trogir, relevant museum and gallery institutions.

The mobility program also included a presentation of the CIRCE project at University of Rijeka’s Centre for Iconographic Studies, which further encouraged knowledge exchange and connections with researchers from other Croatian institutions. During the stay in Split, series of project meetings took place where members of the international consortium developed joint methodology for cataloging controversial cultural heritage, including creation of a glossary and digital catalog units for future online archive. In addition to research activities, participants engaged in the city’s cultural life visiting to exhibitions and collaborating with local art organizations, notably Croatian Association of Visual Artists Split (HULU Split).

This mobility represents an important step in strengthening international research collaboration at Split Faculty of Humanities and contributes to developing new methodologies in studying cultural heritage in the European context.
