The discussion took place at Faculty of Chemistry and Technology, on October 1st, featuring numerous experts, academics, and interested citizens who engaged in discussions regarding key issues related to waste management, emphasizing its potential as a raw material.
In the opening address, the importance of proper waste sorting was emphasized, as well as the goal of reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills to only 10 percent by 2035. Waste is not garbage - when properly sorted, it is raw material!
Experts and scientists shared their insights in engaging presentations: Adela Tolić, chemical engineer from Eko-Imotski ltd., presented challenges and solutions for sustainable management of construction waste, covering everything from recycling materials to reducing environmental impact. Assist. prof. Zvjezdana Popović Perković Ph.D. from University of Split’s Department of Marine Studies raised the issue of ocean and its ecosystems’ pollution with microplastics, becoming increasingly present in marine organisms, posing serious threats to both marine life and human health. Assoc. Prof. Sanja Perinović Jozić Ph.D. from Faculty of Chemistry and Technology showcased a project that not only reduces waste, by recycling soap from the hotel sector, but also creates employment opportunities for persons with disabilities. Branimir Dević, mechanical engineering graduate and technical director of Mold ltd., pointed out innovative technological solutions and importance of collaboration between industry, local communities and consumers in creating sustainable solutions for the future.
