The international exhibition Digital Pigment attracted numerous students, professors, and contemporary art enthusiasts to the University Gallery in Split on October 15th.

The Digital Pigment exhibition features a collaboration of five art academies from five countries: Eszterházy Károly Catholic University in Hungary, Academy of Fine Arts in Split, Faculty of Fine Arts in Cetinje, Rzeszów University from Poland, and Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières from Canada.

The exhibition’s concept is by assoc. prof. Dániel Horváth, working at Hungarian universities in Eger and Budapest, who initiated the idea three years ago and developed it through Erasmus+ cooperation.

“This project connects different artistic communities and opens space for exchange of experiences,” prof. Vedran Perkov said at the opening.

“Students use digital tools as new palette of expression, from those that replace brush and paint to those that question the very medium and explore its boundaries.”

Exhibitors from Split include: Katja Atlagić, Josipa Bebić, Nikolina Ćuk, Ida Bugarić Đuka, Mihael Frančić, Zvonimir Roko, Kristijan Vrdoljak, and Leana Žitko.

The exhibition offers diverse approaches, and each image and installation reveal its author’s personal style.

The digital medium is an excellent tool as long as you use it and are not controlled by it. It becomes problematic when it dominates the author. The idea must be clear; everything else follows from it.

When asked whether the digital medium creates a new kind of visual language among young artists, Perkov responds:

“Yes and no. The digital medium is like a brush, a tool that enables faster distribution and easier accessibility. Regardless of the technology, ultimately, it’s about image or sculpture. This exhibition shows a combination of traditional idea of the image and modern possibilities of its creation.”

Despite global availability of images and information, professor notes that young artists still manage to find their own expression.
