Award ceremony of University of Split’s honorary doctorates took place in Papalić Palace’s Gothic Hall, in Split City Museum. Rector Prof. Dragan Ljutić Ph.D. proclaimed with the sceptre, clothed in togas, decorated with ribbons and honoured with diplomas Piotr Stepnowski, University of Gdańsk Rector, Alfred J. Vella, University of Malta Rector, and Emilio Marin, Prof. Emeritus, distinguished Croatian scientist and diplomat.
In front of vice-rectors, University's constituents’ deans and numerous guests, Rector Ljutić explained why the Senate decided to award honorary doctorates to scientists who have cultivated long-standing cooperation and friendly relations with University of Split.
- Professors Stepnowski and Vella are rectors of universities that, along with our University, founded SEA-EU, the European University of the Seas, an alliance of nine European coastal universities that together develop teaching, research, student exchanges and study programs. We have witnessed the friendship they have shown us; it is our honour and obligation to actively participate in this distinguished university alliance. Prof. Emilio Marin is a man who, with his work, contributed to Croatian science, especially archaeology and early Christian archaeology, representing our country around the world, both diplomatically and scientifically - Rector Ljutić said.
After the ceremony, each honorary doctor gave a speech thanking University, and prof. Marin can boast with two honorary doctorates.
- Exactly twenty years ago I received my first honorary doctorate from University of Paris, and now I am being honoured in my hometown, where I have worked for thirty years at Split Archaeological Museum, as director for 17 years, as well as years of teaching at University - said Dr. Marin, wishing everyone peace and well-being. At the end of the ceremony the Bozzotti Quartet performed the academic anthem Gaudeamus igitur.
