From November 19 to 21, 2024, SEA-EU Staff Week dedicated to "Responsible, Reproducible, and Open Science" took place at the Mediterranean Institute of Life Sciences (MedILS) in Split.
Following the opening address, Prof. Marušić Ph.D. delivered the keynote lecture focused on research integrity, highlighting key values and principles that form the foundation of responsible scientific work. Along with Prof. Željana Bašić, who presented advantages and challenges of open data, including ethical and regulatory issues, participants had the opportunity to learn about responsibilities involved in producing scientific papers. A particular interest was sparked by Antonija Mijatović's workshop on recognizing digital image manipulation. Prof. Julia Priess-Buchheit, from University of Kiel, led an interactive workshop on basic principles of open science, where participants analysed how to apply these principles in their own fields of work.
The program continued with the theme “Reproducibility and Equality in Research.” Prof. Ivan Buljan gave lectures on importance of reliability in scientific research and a workshop on improving research activities with the help of artificial intelligence. After lectures and discussions, participants got to explore city of Split in the company of Ana Ćosić, head of Office for International Cooperation.
The final day was focused on practical application of what was learnt.
This three-day event was an excellent opportunity to strengthen one of goals in SEA-EU project work package, emphasizing ethics, quality, and openness in science.
